Puerto Morelos...

The inhabitants of this small town earn their livelihood from fishing and, to a lesser extent, tourism.

There are attractive beaches north of the main square (Ojo de Agua) and south of town (Punta Estrella). The offshore reef is rich in marine life and local dive shops offer trips.

The town offers reasonably priced lodging and great seafood.

Puerto Morelos is the site of two marine research stations operated by the national university of Mexico and the State Fisheries Department, respectively.

The container port dock south of town is also departure point for the car ferry for Cozumel.

Just south of the village is the Dr. Alfredo Barreda marin Boptanical garden, 150 acres of tropical forest bordered by mangroves to the east. Spider monkeys, deer, parrots and toucans are frecuently spoted by the visitors walking the jungle trails.

There is also a small archeological site, a traditional mayan house and garden, a chiclero camp, an orchid area and a nurssery.

The crococun cocodrile farm, north of puerto morelos, is also worth a visit.
