Boca Iglesia... At Boca Iglesia, the ruins of a 16th century Spanish colonial church are still visible. Francisco Montejo Jr. led an expedition ashore here in 1523 and was attacked by the local Maya. He received 13 arrow wounds and several of his soldiers were killed. On his next foray he was revenged, the Spaniards took the Mayan village, built a church and left a garrison to protect it.

The
colony was shortlived, however, surviving only for three years as one by
one, the soldiers succumbed to disease, starvation and Indian raids.
Reaching this abandoned site is a real adventure involving navigation through the mangroves and a walk through the dense jungle to the ruined church. A colony of spider monkeys lives in the trees around the building. |
